Storage heights that fit real flats

Toddler hooks around 85–95 cm let small hands hang coats without dragging chairs. School-age hanging rails often sit near 140–150 cm, with a second rail or shelf above for adults. Seasonal textiles and medicines stay in a locked or high band above 180 cm.

Open shelves in the child band should not be deeper than about 30 cm if toys must be seen and retrieved without avalanche. Deeper shelves belong behind doors in the adult band where visual calm matters more than independence.

We adjust these numbers on site for unusually tall or small children and for families who want earlier independence. The table below is a starting brief, not a medical chart.

Standard 60 cm wardrobe depth collides with many radiator covers and leaves doors that cannot open fully in narrow rooms. A 35–45 cm carcass with hanging rods oriented for shorter garments often fits Mariahilf and Neubau rooms better. Long dresses then live in a secondary tall unit or are folded.

Sliding doors save swing space but need clear track length; hinged doors need mapped arcs so they do not hit beds. We draw both on the plan when the room is tight.

Soft-close hardware is standard in our joinery notes to protect small fingers and reduce evening slam noise in shared rooms.

Uneven Altbau floors make plinths and adjustable feet essential. We refuse to pretend a rigid 2 m catalogue unit will sit level without fillers. Scribe panels against wavy walls cost less than gaps that collect dust and look unfinished forever.

Chimney breasts create leftover niches. Custom shelves in those niches beat leaving them as dead space or forcing a wardrobe that overhangs the breast and blocks a window.

Ceiling heights above 3 m invite unused upper volumes. We add a locked top band for luggage and seasonal gear rather than stretching child storage into unreachable clouds.

Some towers limit drilling into certain partitions or require landlord approval for heavy wall units. We collect those rules during measure and design storage that can freestand with anti-tip kits when wall fixings are restricted. Anti-tip straps are non-negotiable where climbing is likely.

Fire-rated walls and service shafts are marked on drawings so installers do not treat them as ordinary plasterboard. Guessing here causes expensive repairs and delays.
